Osgood Schlatter disease is an overuse injury that causes knee pain primarily in adolescents. There appears to be a predominance of males who are affected. There usually is inflammation in the area where your Patellar tendon attaches to your shinbone.Sometimes a piece of bone may be seen in the area on X-rays. Although the knee pain may be present off and on for years, the majority of individuals outgrow this disease once their bones have reached skeletal maturity. Osgood Schlatter disease is treated conservatively with Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory, rest or modification of activities, knee straps or sleeves, and physical therapy aimed at local treatment of the pain. Surgery is reserved for unresolved cases present after cessation of skeletal growth despite optimal conservative measures.
